Story Life: Finding The Right Intro

I didn’t finish any of the books I’m reading this month, so I’m going to talk about writing instead. ^_^ So, the story I’m calling the current project has been a work-in-progress for a while. Sometimes, for fun, as part of my general writing process, I mess around and write a potential opening scene. It helps me get a feel for the characters and their voices and the world. Sometimes I get to keep this. Most times I don’t. For the current project, it was great for getting into the MC’s head and finding her voice and getting used to her personality, because she’s a strange one, but what I…

    Letting the Bad Guy Win

Guys! Have you ever been watching a movie and wanted the villain to just…get away with everything? I don’t want this all the time. There’s something so satisfying about watching a hero rise up and slay the beast, metaphorically or not metaphorically speaking. But sometimes, I want the bad guy to win. Sometimes I identify too much with them. Sometimes I don’t like the hero! One of my favorite movies of all time, that will remain nameless for this example to avoid spoilers because that twist is too good, has a main character who’s being stalked by a someone who’s getting increasingly more threatening to our hero every time he…

    Writing Thoughts: Not Settling

Why do you write? Seriously. Do you know why you write? There are people who write for entertainment. There are people who write to explore some kind of theme or message. Some writers want to go on an adventure. Me? I’m a very emotional writer. I’m not trying to “say” anything. I don’t make decisions based on things like “logic.” I had a writing friend point out last week that some people chase a “feeling” when they write. They want their stories to feel a certain way. Excuse me while I wax dramatic for a second, but I have never felt so understood in my life! It┬áreminds me of this…

    Project Juggling Update

A few weeks ago, or something, I mentioned how I was going to attempt to do all my editing during the day so I can draft and plan a different story at night. And I can honestly say that this is something that will work for me long term. One of the biggest things I like about editing during the day is that it’s easier to tell when my brain is tired. It’s easier to stop working and do something else. And it’s nice to be editing and not have to battle with mental and physical exhaustion. Not that I don’t mentally fatigue myself during the day. That still happens.…

    A Cup of Duology Tea

Okay. I’m just going to say it. I kind of sort of have a sequel idea for NO REST FOR THE WICKED. I mean like, I had a concept a year ago, but like, no plot. Now, I kind of sort of have a plot. It’s not like a fully developed “I’m DYING to write this” kind of plot. More like a, “hey, look at that shiny thing over there,” kind of plot. I think what happened is that I’ve come to conclusion that in order to properly tell a certain story idea I have, I must write a historical setting for an entire novel. I’ve just had a lot…
