Stories Based On Dreams Based On Stories

Ever write a story based on a dream you had? I tried a time or two. Once I had a dream that I was a mermaid who came on land after my human mother was kidnapped by some dudes and held for ransom. Sounds pretty awesome right? 😐 Lol! I got one chapter in and gave up. It made zero sense. Why did they kidnap her? And how the crap am I a mermaid if BOTH of my parents are human? Yeah, they were BOTH human. My dreams make so much sense. Another time I tried to incorporate a couple of dreams into a story about past lives. I realized…

What It Means To Develop “Thick Skin”

When you’re a writer, you’re told early on to develop a “thick skin.” Publishers and magazines and agents are going reject you. Readers aren’t going to like you. You can’t take it personally. Blah, blah. But what does that actually mean? Recently, I listened to someone complain about how hurt they are by negative reviews. Someone told this person that they needed to develop a thicker skin and stop being extra sensitive and stuff. It’s not that I wouldn’t be upset if someone left a lengthy negative review on my work. What inspired you to start your YouTube channel? KRISTEN: When I decided I was going to get serious about finishing my novel in 2014, I, like every other writer, had certain questions…

Once There Was An Inspiration Ramble

Do you remember how you felt when you got your first idea for a novel? Was it a lightning bolt of inspiration that jolted you into action? Or was it a dull cloudy day that you can barely even remember and you just kind of stumbled into it unintentionally? When I wrote my first novel, I wasn’t particularly inspired by anything. I think it was summer. I remember telling my sister about it on a Saturday while we waited for our turn at the salon. I just wanted to try writing a book. As I was twelve, I’m sure you can imagine how great it is. 🙂 Being that I was…

    Words I Can’t Spell 101

Thought I would sprinkle a little fun around since it’s crunch time in PitchWars land and many people are developing ulcers. I, myself, have been stalking the crap out of some folks, and I don’t usually do that. BUT I read this blog post on perseverance a few days after the crazy started. Usually I read these and I’m like, “uh-huh, that’s great…” (glower) But, I don’t know, this is a good one. 🙂 I decided it really WAS more fun to assume that some of the mentor tweets were about ME! And why wouldn’t they be? I’m amazing. 😛 Really though, I need help! I can’t fix this story if I…
