    Writing Thoughts: Not Settling

Why do you write? Seriously. Do you know why you write? There are people who write for entertainment. There are people who write to explore some kind of theme or message. Some writers want to go on an adventure. Me? I’m a very emotional writer. I’m not trying to “say” anything. I don’t make decisions based on things like “logic.” I had a writing friend point out last week that some people chase a “feeling” when they write. They want their stories to feel a certain way. Excuse me while I wax dramatic for a second, but I have never felt so understood in my life! It reminds me of this…

    Author Interview with Jodi Perkins

GUYS! I has an awesome guest today! Jodi Perkins, author of suspenseful, page-turning, and fantastical YA! BLACK LILIES was released earlier this month, part two in a series featuring a quartet of sisters with exciting season-based abilities. There’s a theme of time manipulation that runs through the books, and today, Jodi answers some of my nosy burning questions about the series, time travel, and saving yourself from a Goldilocks eating bear. Part of BLACK LILIES takes place in the 19th century. How much research did you have to do for this part of the story, and how much fun did you have? I honestly knew nothing about the 19th century. I mean, really,…

The DIY Publishing Diary: Volume One

Wassup, peeples! ^_^ So, it’s really happening! “No Rest for the Wicked” has a publication date of May 10, 2017! 😆 I was going to wait until fall, but it’s like, everything is on schedule to be done by March, so…why wait? Then I can put my next book out in the fall. 🙂 Two weeks ago, I mentioned an unnamed project that started all of this. That project is a book of mostly dark & whimsical poetry. And in fact, the poetry book is why I rearranged the menu bar last month. The goal is to get this out by January 2018 or sooner, but that will depend on how…

    Writing Uphill

Okay, so it happened. That moment where I get to the middle of the story and completely lose my shiz. Yep. I hit the beginning of May, and the middle of my story, and I completely freaked out. I got over the first freak out. Then I had another one. You know how you write when you’re tired sometimes? That happened. And for some reason, I just KNEW it was horrid! So, I went back and read over it and tried to tweak some things, and I didn’t want to, subconsciously, because I wasn’t feeling it, I just wanted to move on, but I did it anyway, cause, crazy. However, aside…

The Benefits of Creative Partners in Crime

Without fail, every time I talk about a project with someone, I am ALWAYS helped by it. Last weekend, I was exchanging some emails with a long time highly creative friend of mine (who of course lives on the other side of the country), and as I was typing out a response, I realized that there was a MAJOR (like embarrassingly huge) plot hole in “Phantom Silence.” One of those holes that’s like so big, I can’t believe I didn’t trip over it and break something. THIS is why writing buddies (or even just anyone you can talk back and forth with about your projects) are so important. I had…
