    Opening Sentences for Uncompleted Projects

Fun fact: I used to have over 100 blog drafts. I eventually got it down to under 25, because some of them were just ideas. Others were full posts that were outdated because things had changed. In any case, one of the posts to survive is the one I’m presenting today. A few years ago, to embarrass myself for my writing and blog anniversary, I shared the opening lines for some of my older projects. In getting that post together, I had actually compiled the opening lines for every wannabe novel-length project I could find, finished or unfinished. For brevity, in that original post, I only included my favorites. I…

The Writer I Was Ten Years Ago…

Over the weekend, I was cleaning up my Stories folder, because I decided to finally and officially move “Discord” and another story called “How Deep Is My Darkness” to the Story Graveyard. If I’m not going to publish them, as is, and I’m not, then there’s no reason to keep them in the same folder as stories that are actually finished. The reason it took me so long to move them is twofold: First: They weren’t in horrible shape, and at the time, I had literally trashed every single story I had ever written, and I don’t know. I guess I just thought it was sad. So I didn’t trash…

    Overdue Celebration

It’s Thanksgiving week for the US. I was going to post a story, to flex my flash fiction muscles, but I didn’t feel like it, so I’m doing this instead. I have officially completed some 22 stories of varying lengths that I consider or considered at one point to be a novel. After reading Rhett & Link’s Book of Mythicality (they’re my favorite YouTubers, they wrote a book), I’ve come to realize that I haven’t celebrated 22 times. When I finished my first novel, I was so excited. But this first novel, while hilarious now, was truly awful. I actually get a little annoyed when people say things like, “Oh,…

First Lines & Opening Sentences: Anniversary Edition

You’re in for a treat today! In celebration of the month I finished my first ever novel project – 21 years ago – I’m embarrassing the crap out of myself by pulling out the opening sentences of some old projects and displaying them for your enjoyment, because we all need a good laugh sometimes. 😀 Note: Unless otherwise stated, the stories have a contemporary/modern-day or near-future setting. If the story is finished, I’ll put the date, otherwise it’ll just be marked as abandoned. 😅 Untitled First Novel (romance?) – circa 1997 “Beep! Beep! Beep!” I turned off my alarm clock and opened my eyes. I looked around my room. Analysis…

    A Dip Into Organization Land

So, I went on record that 2015 was a pretty depressing year for writing. It’s the first year I didn’t finish a single project since I got off a 2 year accidental writing hiatus in 2011. And I spent a lot of time beating myself up for that. The thing is, if I had just stopped beating myself up, it wouldn’t have taken me so long to find a project I could stick with. I was just shoving things down my throat until I vomited story all over the place. And it was during that recovery period that the right ideas found me. Ideas I’ve had for months, mind you.…
