    Big Magic & Turning Points

Over the weekend I finished BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert, and I have to say right off the bat, GO GET YOUR HANDS ON THIS BOOK NOW! There’s nothing like reading a book by someone who understands the crazy roller coaster writers go through on a regular basis. Barely halfway through the book, and I was back on the computer with my story after nearly two weeks of doing nothing. I feel like this book was an extended hand, reaching down to help me pull myself out of yet another writerly pity party. I have a feeling I’ll be reading this book multiple times. 😉 It wasn’t like this was a…

    Tripping Down Shakespearean Lane

Today I want to chat a little bit about the creative literary genius known as William Shakespeare – one of the finest poets to ever walk the earth. One of the things I love most about him was his ability to weave hidden commentary in just about everything he wrote. The comedy The Taming of Shrew for example has some sinister underlying themes about control and conforming to society. Everyone is laughing, but underneath the silly, lighthearted overtones is a wild independent girl who is being conspired against and dragged down into the cookie cutter mold of society. A simple switch in tone, and this play would be quite alarming! In the comedy A…

That Time I Decided That Brainstorming Is The Best Thing Ever!

As you know, last week was Thanksgiving here in the US!! I got to see my favorite uncle and cousins, the only time of year I get to see them, and it’s always awesome. 😀 This year I got into a discussion about characterization and YA novels with one of my cousins, who’s like 22 now! I remember when he was born. CRAZY! After all the yakking and laughing and what not, I’m feeling a lot better about the projects on my plate. (My dad made squirrel and dumplings! I hate eating those things, but he was so proud of himself, so I tried it, and it was really good. O.O) So,…

Get Yer Writer’s Fuel: Conference Highlights

Have you ever been to writing conference and came back all pumped up to write? Hopefully, if you’ve been to a conference, you have! And that’s exactly how I felt after this year’s Third Annual Creative Writer’s Conference of Middle Tennessee! After the first conference, I came back to writing all pumped up and ready to keep writing after what I saw as several hard failures – aka, several times of falling hard on my butt. After last year’s conference, I was in the middle of feeling good about myself (ha,ha), so I came back feeling like the world was my oyster, and I was a shiny special pearl. 😛…

Hey! There’s A Book Inside My Phone!

I’ve been reading on my phone a lot lately. Not just to sneak in pages here and there at work, no. I find myself hugged up on the couch with my phone in hand. Reading. When I have a perfectly good iPad Mini at my feet. I started doing this a few months ago when I was in a restaurant with my mom, waiting on whatever she was picking up while she chatted away with the people who work there. I wanted to read to pass the time and all I had on me was my phone. So I downloaded the eBook I was reading at the time to my Kindle App…
