    Writing Playlists & Such Things

Once upon a time, five years ago, I made a story playlist for the first time. It contained a whopping total of 7 songs, and I was obsessed with all of them. After that, I made playlists for every working project! They helped me focus, and I figured out how to add songs that helped me envision scenes and characters and songs that evoked emotions. But then, in 2017, I ended up with a playlist of 36 songs, and they haven’t done anything for me since. I think the reasoning for this is twofold. For one, they weren’t actually helping me with the story to begin with. When I look…

Stories Based On Dreams Based On Stories

Ever write a story based on a dream you had? I tried a time or two. Once I had a dream that I was a mermaid who came on land after my human mother was kidnapped by some dudes and held for ransom. Sounds pretty awesome right? 😐 Lol! I got one chapter in and gave up. It made zero sense. Why did they kidnap her? And how the crap am I a mermaid if BOTH of my parents are human? What It Means To Develop “Thick Skin”

When you’re a writer, you’re told early on to develop a “thick skin.” Publishers and magazines and agents are going reject you. Readers aren’t going to like you. You can’t take it personally. Blah, blah. But what does that actually mean? Recently, I listened to someone complain about how hurt they are by negative reviews. Someone told this person that they needed to develop a thicker skin and stop being extra sensitive and stuff. It’s not that I wouldn’t be upset if someone left a lengthy negative review on my work. It’s just I’m past the point where I’m going to excessively whine about it, especially in public (online). Not…

Utopia Con 2017: Book Haul & Panels ^_^

GUYS! I got shiny pictures! ^_^ First we have a gorgeous couple of pictures from my hotel window. This is outside the Airport Marriott in Nashville. Pretty Tennessee trees. 😀 Next up is a shiny UTOPIA Con bag. Came with a free novella and a fan that plugs into smart phones. ^_^ I somehow miraculously made it in time for the keynote, but it was super short, so sad to say, I barely remember anything. Plus I missed a bit of it because I had to pee and they started a little early. This next picture is some greenery I ran into across from the hotel entrance. I took notes…

All the Times I Quit: Storytime

Also known as “the art of feeling really bad about your writing self.” In honor of Insecure Writers Support Group day, I’m going to post about my confidence issues. I don’t officially participate in the hop, but I happen to want to talk about my writer insecurity today. Also, the question this month asked if you ever said “I Quit” and what made you come back to writing. That’s a soapbox for me, and funny enough, I also wanted to talk about that. The main reason is because I need the pep talk. I feel like the first 20k words of “The Puppet Box” are trash, and while I know that…
