The DIY Publishing Diary: Volume Three

Volume One and Volume Two Other Volumes Linked Below Diary: MONTH THREE Did not do much, I have to say. I did poke at the work-in-progress some, but mostly I wrapped myself in a blanket and binged on Netflix and Hulu. Somewhere in here I got my line edits in the old inbox. In typically me fashion, I skimmed over my notes and thought, “No problem. Piece of cake.” 😂 I’m clearly a comedian in disguise. Of course, now that it’s over, I’m like, “I could do that again.” LOL! Diary: WEEK SEVENTEEN Finished up line edits this week. I would like to declare that I’m going to pace myself…

    Editing Mania

Dudes…line edits are no joke. I did get used to all the notes after a few chapters, thank goodness, but that hasn’t made them any less overwhelming to look at. That said, I do have a nice pace going, and most importantly, I’m still excited about my story. 😀 Apparently I had a huge em-dash problem going on. I have spaces around all of them, and sometimes I need to replace them with an ellipses or a comma or vice versa. There’s also a lot of axing around my dialogue tags. Enough is Enough?

When is enough feedback enough? I’m going to use the Query Letter Hell (QLH) forum on Absolute Write (AW) for my example today. Someone posts a query. It gets critiqued. They revise and post it again. It gets critiqued. They revise and post it again. It gets critiqued. They revise and post it again. It gets critiqued. I’ll stop there, but you can see my point. I’ve seen people (seriously — plural) with over 50 versions of their query in Query Hell. And the sad thing is, not all of these people are terrible at writing queries. Parts of the query will be great and they’ll rewrite the whole thing from…

A Stroll Through Editing Park & Gone Girl Thoughts

A couple of weeks ago I found a screenshot on my computer that I took of an earlier version of DISCORD and found TWO typos right off the bat! They weren’t in the draft I sent out, but really?!! Anyway, folks, there are a LOT of different ways to edit out there. When I was organizing my latest revision notes for DISCORD, I was getting stressed out thinking of all the ways I could go about it. I’ve seen people make these crazy flow charts. I’ve seen people cut out tiny strips of paper and spread them out all over their room! I’ve seen people paste index cards all over their desk.…

    Discord, My Love ^_^

As is tradition here on The Narcissistic Rose, whenever I move another project to the finished pile, I like to reflect on it and what I learned while I was writing it. ^_^ Reflection Happy **Amazing things can happen when you trust yourself and the characters to tell the story. **I’ve learned to embrace my half-panster nature. I don’t have everything figured out before I start, and that’s okay. **Don’t skimp on the sleep and still expect to be able to write the next day. If I stay up to finish a chapter one night, I’m pretty much no freaking good the next day. Complications & Solutions So, some of…
