Brainstorming Diaries

GUYS! Have I mentioned lately how much I love brainstorming?

I freaking LOVE brainstorming! While WHISPER is with the next editor, I thought I’d be nice to myself and relax. Of course, relaxing doesn’t mean I won’t poke at my next story. I have to poke at it! It’s so shiny. ^_^ And I’m learning and discovering so much. It never ceases to amaze me how the floodgate just opens up. Plus, I got to Google some interesting things that would make me look like a psychopath to anyone looking over my shoulder. #excited 😀

All these discoveries are great for a couple of reasons: One, I need them to tell the story, duh. But two, it means my gut was right when it told me that things would start falling into place when I started working on it. Whew! I mean, I wasn’t worried (cough, cough), but it’s nice to see the world building up right before my subconscious eyes. ^_^

Some things I can spill about the new project: MC is a bounty hunter for an unscrupulous personage. Story is set in modern day but has ancient origins. I’m still not clear on how to tell that part of the story. The MC has my back though. She’ll push me in the right direction. Gently, of course. 😛

We’re both really excited (me and MC) to be working on this, and the playlist for this story is an interesting mix of pop ballads and alternative music. MC has complete confidence in me and has been having a field day with the playlist. She wants me to listen to to it everyday, but I’m trying to listen to an audio book for probably the fourth time in my life. It’s hard for me to focus, but it’s interesting. It’s dense reading though: Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson.

Speaking of reading, I also sat down and read with my eyes: Enchanted: Magic Spark, an anthology of three witchy stories that literally came out yesterday, and guys, no joke, it made me miss witches SO much. I mentioned it a little in my review, but the nostalgia is BAD. Made worse by the fact that actual sorceresses have shown up in both Top Secret Duology ideas. Also, one duology is threatening to turn into a trilogy, but that’s all I’m going to say about that right now. Haha. In any case, the anthology was a lot less romancey overall than expected, in a good way, and I had a great time reading it, which really has me wanting to write right now, but I’m trying to be good and finish editing first, because I promised. ^_^

I’ve had characters with powers and such, but I haven’t had a witch-like character since 2013, and she was by far my most favorite thing about that story. So when the sorceress showed up in the duology idea I’m currently outlining, I freaked the hell out, also in a good way. She even talked to me after the character most affected by her wouldn’t even tell me her name. He gave me some theories, but him and my MC both just refer to her as Sorceress. But Sorceress told me her name, I can see her clearly, and I’m a little obsessed. I hope she shows up in the story, but I don’t know if she’s a good witch or bad witch yet. 😀

I also read a picture book retelling of Swan Lake that had beautiful pictures but was kind of “meh” in the way the story was told. I think it’s because it was told from the prince’s POV, and that just wasn’t interesting. I’ve read so many creative picture books lately, so the bar was probably higher than it should have been.

Anywho, I thought I’d do something different today and divulge a song from the playlist. ^_^ There’s a pop star in the story that my MC is stalking (don’t ask – haha). The pop star’s musical style is inspired heavily by Katy Perry. Enjoy. 🙃

I’m so relieved to hear that I’m not the only person who has playlists for my WIPs! Chasing Echoes has music by Lindsey Stirling for a lot of background scenes, the songs “Powerful” and “Ritual” by Eliie Goulding, and a few oldies that I have no idea how they wiggled their way in (it’s not like *I* choose this stuff, lol).

Glad to hear that the ideas are flowing for you right now! Very exciting. 🙂

Ooh, I love Lindsey Sterling. I have one of her songs on this story’s playlist. ^_^ The characters always like to point out songs they like. They know I think about them when the playlist is on.

The way you feel about brainstorming is the way I feel about the start of a story. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this before – I’m a Story Starter Specialist!
I can take a word prompt/picture prompt and go with it for about a quarter into a short story…LOVE doing it!
Maybe I need to pair up with people who love writing the middles and ends of stories.
We’d make quite a formidable trio!

Good luck with your new project and the MC pushing you in the right direction! 🙂

I love brainstorming too, but I tend to steer clear of it lately. Until I’ve got the, oh, seventy projects completed that are currently on my plate, I can’t possibly squeeze anything else in. Part of me says I should just turn it all into flash fiction.

I’m excited about the new projects you have in the pipeline.

    • Krystal Jane

I feel like it takes me forever to be comfortable with a story, or for it to be ready to write, so I’m always brainstorming something. I think my flash fiction skills would get better if I worked on them more than once every two years.
