#WIPMarathon Update #20 (September)

🙂 Hiya! Fall is in the air…the leaves are changing! On a couple of trees anyway. They’re building a new gas station two feet from my neighborhood, ya know, right across the street from the other one. Glorious.

I’m actually in the final break of an all day Writer’s Conference right now! So it’ll be a little while until I get to everyone, but I hope you’re all doing well!

So, how’s the writing going, you ask? One work in progress update being served… 😛

Last report wordcount + chapter count:
“Legion” = 16,784 words, Chapter 6

Current report WC + CC:
“Legion” = 16,912 words, Chapter 6
“Nevermore” (formerly known as “Raven”) = 68,444 words, Chapter 8 of 46 on rewrite
previous word count for draft one was 66,273 words (Progress!)

WIP Issues This Month:
I realized that I had to set “Legion” aside for the same reason I’ve been setting so many others aside lately: there wasn’t a clear path to the ending, I wasn’t excited enough about the ending I did have (plus it didn’t make any sense!), and I wasn’t writing with complete freedom. Overthinking: the bane of many a writer’s existence. I decided I couldn’t let the embarrassment of changing projects for the thousandth time this year lock me into working on something that probably isn’t ready and ruining an idea I love! So, lots and lots of rewrites on “Raven/Nevermore” (YAY!) it is, because it’s the only thing that’s working right now – aka: a sign from the universe. 😉 It’s not as terrible as I thought. Now that I’m done beating myself up for no reason, I can see that it’s just a first draft, and it’s beautiful in its own first draft kind of way. >.< <3

Now, the original beginning was some serious level 100 crap, so I just rewrote that from scratch and saved what I could. I lost the one good line that I loved, but sacrifices must be made! When I did this on DISCORD I had multiple fits, but this wasn’t so bad. Super time consuming, but I had fun. #seriouslynosarcasm ^_^

Quote 5

What I learned this month in writing:
1 – I need to stop letting amazing writers freak me out. This doesn’t always happen, strange enough, but I’m reading THE DEAD HOUSE by Dawn Kurtagich and I freaking love it so far! I had a tiny crisis after five pages, but I’m okay. Lol!
2 – I have been freaking out for three years over paranormal being a “dead” category, but Ifeoma reminded me a couple of months ago to keep writing what’s in my heart anyway because “That’s the only way you can persevere and work on it over and over again.” Truer words have never been spoken. ^_^
3 – Behind every great writer is someone who pushes them forward when they are frozen or dragging their feet (or freaking out, whatevs). I was reminded this month that I have my siblings and all of my writing pals to push me forward when I’m being crazy for no reason. (tears)
4 – Chinese Proverb from my calendar: Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.

What distracted me this month while writing:
Having another meltdown and Parks and Recreation on Netflix!! It reminded me so much of The Office, which I love, so of course I consumed it like a crazy person. ^_^ On a side note: thanks to the iron, I have been sleeping SO much better and have actually heard my alarm going off every morning this month…now I just need to work on not crawling back into bed when I turn it off. Also, less brain fog. Score!! Oh, yeah, I’m also one of those crazy people who buys Christmas presents super early, so I’ve been doing some of that. 😛 Hey, if I start early, I have fewer distractions later when it’s crunch time on the story! See? Genius. >.<

Goal for next month:
Same goal as last month — different project, obviously. Finish the rewrites and surface edits for “Nevermore” by the end of October. (No problem!) Then I’ll go into actual edits sometime in November. The goal is to have it polished and ready to do something with it (if I must) by February 1st. It’s a leap month, y’all! ^_^

Last 200 words:

“I don’t know.” She turns her face to the vaulted, tiled ceiling. “If she didn’t marry him for his money, why did she marry him? Was he hot?”

“Gross.” I wrap my hands around my arm to warm them, but it isn’t helping. “He was like a thousand. I only saw him the one time, but he was very, very old then. Kind of papery looking.”

Anastasia snorts. “I can’t imagine marrying someone that old.”

“Please.” I flick her arm. “You’d marry the crypt keeper if it meant you’d get to live in a house half this size.”

She grins and waggles her brows at me. “We can get married at the cemetery. And after the ‘I dos’ I can just…push him over.”

Happy Fall Everybody!! ^_^

I hope to have a post up about the conference next week! I have discovered a couple of very amazing things, and I can’t wait to share! (And yes, I’m totally posting this from my phone! O_o But I did write most of it last night, so that’s why it looks amazing. Lol!)

#WIPMarathon Report #13 (February)
