Editing Mania

Dudes…line edits are no joke. I did get used to all the notes after a few chapters, thank goodness, but that hasn’t made them any less overwhelming to look at. That said, I do have a nice pace going, and most importantly, I’m still excited about my story. 😀

Apparently I had a huge em-dash problem going on. I have spaces around all of them, and sometimes I need to replace them with an ellipses or a comma or vice versa. There’s also a lot of axing around my dialogue tags. Of course there is other fun stuff: some comma stuff. Some adding, deleting, and rearranging of sentences, and thinking, “Oh, that really does sound better.” I’m not surprised about the em-dash problem, because I avoided those things for years. I only recently, as in three years ago, started using them in my books, no joke. So, next time should be better. 😛

I’ve had people tell me line edits are rough and intimidating and overwhelming, but still, I was nowhere close to being prepared. I may have freaked out some already, but really, it’s fun. Mostly. Kind of. Sometimes. ^_^ I do like editing a great deal in general though. 😊

My patronus is a ginger cat, by the way. Hmm, shiny patronus. ^_^

Okay. Focus.

Anyway. No editor is perfect, and I know having an interesting story is more important than it being well-written and well-edited, but can’t I have it all? Yes, I think I can. After all, my reading experience is so much more enjoyable when I’m not mentally correcting crap in my head every other paragraph. It makes sense that other people might enjoy the extra effort as well.

I’ve been trying to read a book that is suffering from a rather atrocious editing job. It’s half unreadable, and that is super frustrating. It’s hard to make sense of it at times. I want to like it because some of the readable parts are interesting and I know the author, but I’m actually starting to question whether it had an editor at all. It’s that bad. This person is not a good writer in the first place. They have a terrible repetition problem. Or as some people might say, a “get to the damn point!” problem. Author has the character falling down, and then explains again how they fell down in the next paragraph. In another scene, the character changed out of wet clothes, only to change out of them again one page later, like the author (and editor, if there was one) can’t remember that the character already changed their freaking clothes!! No to mention all the typos. So. Many. Freaking. Typos. I might need to scream, actually. I had an urge once to pour hot wax on the book, but it isn’t mine. I’ll try through the end of this week, because I’d really like to leave a decent review for it, if I can. But if I can’t knock it out by then, it not worth it, and I quit.

Anywho, I suspect my editor dislikes dialogue tags. She didn’t flag all of them, of course, but if it could be cut, she’s marked it. So far, I’ve only kept two that she suggested I hack. I agree with her on the vast majority of everything, so if nothing else, I definitely made the right decision to go with her. The first couple of days were definitely a little rough. Now I know how people feel when I leave a bunch of notes all over their stuff.

But I’m learning things. Hopefully, I’ll remember most of it so I have an even shinier draft to send to the editor next time! And I think it’s worth it. Even if I only sell five copies. At least those five people won’t have to suffer through nonsense and crap to read my story. But I already know I’m going to find a typo or something after it’s published and scream. LOL!

Anyway, back to editing. Fun, relaxing editing. 😀

Yes, I know the patronus thing was so incredibly random. I’m just so excited to have a cat patronus! My sister has a red squirrel, which is so hilarious and adorable and awesome at the same time. 😸

DON’T MAKE ME TELL YOU WHAT A PATRONUS IS!! Google that ish.

On Covers & Romantic Plot Lines

Let’s cut right to the chase: New Adult Romance. If I see another generic cover with some random brown-haired guy almost kissing some random girl (of any hair color, but to be honest, they all look the same)…well, there is no good way to end this sentence. I’ve read a LOT of historical romance, folks. And… Continue Reading
