Pep Talking

You have a unique perspective.

Take 50 writers and put them in the a room with one objective: to write a romance between a lime and a raspberry, and you will get 50 wildly different stories.

Will some of these stories have common themes? Of course they will, but YOU are the ONLY one who will write that exact story in that exact way. You’re the only one. Go ahead, whip up a quick little tale about a lime and raspberry romance.

Case and point: My tale ends with the raspberry being carried away by a stately Blue-jay to it’s young, only along the way, the bird runs into a clean, glass window and raspberry guts go everywhere. Meanwhile, the lime withers into a prune-like shape and hardens. He remains alive to this day, hard and bitter at the bottom of a fruit basket in Mel Gibson’s house.

Bet you anything, you story doesn’t end the same exact way.

The writing world is tough. You’re not the only high fantasy, supernatural science fiction, historical horror, contemporary romance about a loss – insert whatever here – kind of writer.

But what your story has that none of the other stories have is YOU.

This is why it is SO important that you forget about everything else and write whatever it is that is in you to write. Because someone is already doing JK Rowling, Stephen King, John Grisham, Dan Brown, Cassandra Clare, whoever, you name them. You’re never going to stick out from the crowd that way. There are hordes of copy cats and followers out there. Let them fall to the wayside. Let them hold those tiny spots at the bottom.

You don’t have to settle for just a few rabid fans. If you have them and love them, that’s great! But if you want hundreds, go get them. If you want thousands, go get them. If you want millions, go and freaking get them.

There’s a reason why there’s that saying: Reach for the moon and even if you miss, you just might land among the stars. Because anyone can tell you who isn’t going to land on the moon, people who were shooting for the top of the ant hill.

No one can tell the story you have to tell. That story came to YOU. It chose YOU. It wanted YOU.

And if the writing journey is knocking you down, take to heart this quote from Randy Pausch: “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a change to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”

It’s knocking you down because you’re strong. It’s knocking you down because you have more talent, more strength, and more skill than the ones it isn’t knocking down. It’s knocking you down not to keep you down, but to weed out the ones who aren’t strong enough. They won’t get back up. They won’t keep trying. You will.

So, don’t be afraid to go for you what want.
Don’t be afraid to shoot higher than other people think you should.

Don’t be ashamed of your battle wounds. People with scars have lived. People who live are strong.

Per Michael Jordan: Limits, like fears, are often just an illusion.

There are no limits. Use that fear as emotional fuel in your writing.

Even identical twins are not exactly alike. Little things like which side of the womb they were on creates diversity in them before they are even born.

You are the only one who can write that story.
Write it.
