I finished the first draft of HOUSE OF FALLING EMBERS last Friday!! 😀 (pause for congratulatory applause) ^_^
I think I started around March 10th, so, it took me just around 7 weeks, which was a lot faster than I was expecting. I’m not sure why, but I mostly wrote on the weekend. I averaged around 8k words every Saturday or Sunday. So, I guess it’s not a surprise I finished when I did. I wrote a little bit during the week, but I was mostly reading, so by the time I got to the weekend, I was kind of antsy and wanting to write.
So, sometime in March, I mentioned that I deleted my writing projects page. For a long time, I relied on that list to help me narrow down what to work on next, much like I used to rely too much on vampires to supply my brain with interesting stories too tell. The funny thing is, my writing projects page never actually helped. Most of the time I would end up working on some wild card anyway. Also funny, the vampires actually started to drag me down. Too much of a good thing. 😛
But I wanted to do a quick update to say that deleting that page and taking that pressure off myself was completely the right decision. I don’t have the usual “what to work on next stress” that usually arrives at this stage. Because instead of a list of stories to choose from, I got to sit and back and focus on finding the loudest idea in my head.
I am taking the week off. Kind of. I did some light editing on Monday because I wanted to change something with the ending and tinker with something in the middle, but other than that, I am resting my brain. Kind of.
Because guess what?! I’m brainstorming the next project already! I’m taking notes! I’m in love! And I’m doing something different! But more on that later. >.<
But this is the best time to start brainstorming. It gives me something to do, so my previous story can rest in my brain. And it keeps me from getting too lazy (and crazy), because I have a shiny new project that wants to get out.
Sometimes we just need to change things up. 😀
Anyway, the plan is to start editing next week or the week after. I have plenty of time to fix stuff, but I also want to go ahead and get started, you know, because. excitement.
So, HOUSE OF FALLING EMBERS is a folklore-inspired paranormal thingie about a girl who lost her friend in the woods, and then nine years later, she moves back to the town and starts falling apart. ^_^
It has a different ending than what I usually go for, but it was fun doing something different. Furthermore, I don’t usually work with main characters who have a boyfriend. In fact, the last time I actually finished a story where I did, they broke up three chapters in. The time before that, according to my records, was in the year 2000. So…that makes me feel old.
It was fun working with that though. Obviously, my main character has some issues, or it wouldn’t be fun, but it pulled different emotions out of me that I usually don’t have to flex that much. I ended up crying a lot while I was writing this. Then I’d laugh at myself and cry some more. Really, I think I might have been half crazy the whole time, because I was seriously going into some kind fog some days. And then I would look at my document and think, “What did I even just write, right now?” It was like that pretty much the entire way through. It was weird. But I won’t complain unless I read this over later and it’s a disaster. 😛
In the meantime:
