Hey!! Dudes! After having a meltdown over formatting (haha), I finally used my brain and rewatched some of the Kristen Martin YouTube videos I found so helpful last September. Because I was thinking, “Surely she talked about formatting in her ‘How to Publish a Book’ series.” And she did! About the meltdown (bless my family, right?), I was trying to use a free trial of InDesign along with a template and a video tutorial. Yeah, no. It was so not something I could figure out in a reasonable amount of time. And before that experience, I tried to use a few different templates and MS Word. Maybe they’re all fine and it’s just me, but those accompanying videos sounded like gibberish.
Keep in mind, I’m not one of those people who typical fumble with tech. So, if it takes more than five minutes to figure out, it’s not worth my time and I quit. 😛 Still, I’m like, either I’m stupid and don’t know it (which is not true, because I’m a genius 😉 ahaha), or these just aren’t the right templates for me.
Off I go to YouTube and see that Kristen Martin used MS Word and a template from DIYBookFormats.com. I don’t remember if I tried one of their templates or not, but I was encouraged to know she used Word as I already have Word and will be more comfortable using it. So I found BookDesignTemplates.com hiding in my favorites folder. I had a coupon, so I bought one to try. (By the way, the guide who explained how to use this is my hero, like seriously – the video is 54 minutes long and me and my short attention span watched the whole thing and played along without getting frustrated).
Everything was very easy. Took me about an hour and an half to get it looking like I wanted, which includes me having to start over from scratch once because I messed up. I think that’s pretty good, actually, for a newbie. 😊 Three cheers for templates! 😀 I didn’t have to do any of the hard stuff! #formattingwin
Here’s a peek!
So, I promised a shiny cover in the title, didn’t I? (Not mine, obviously. Soon! ^_^) First, here’s a little bit about the book and the author (who I also found on YouTube):
Release date: Spring 2017 (date TBA)
A mysterious island. An ancient evil. A society determined to gain power.
Fifteen-year-old Abigail Cole and seventeen-year-old Benjamin Cole never thought one day could alter their lives forever. After a violent attack leaves their father in the hospital and their mother goes missing, both discover there’s more to their family history than mental illness.
But when Abi is abducted, she learns the attack wasn’t random. Thrust into an exotic and beautiful world part of a multi-millennial feud, Abi must decide who to trust in a society built on secrets. Enlisting the help of a boy connected to her in impossible ways, Abi uncovers a family secret stretching generations–a secret her abductors have also discovered.
With Abi gone, Ben tries his best to search for both his sister and his mother, but his hold on reality is fading. Something dark has latched onto him. Violent hallucinations and paranoia force him to believe he’s next in line for the family curse.
Set in a world of magic and fatal powers, failure can result in unthinkable damage. With the clock ticking, Abi and Ben must decide what’s right in time to save themselves and those they love.
When darkness is coming, who do you trust?
