Playlist Mania

Do you ever make a playlist for your stories? Long before I ever heard of people doing such a thing, I had a story called “From Out of the Ashes.” And this story had a bonafide faux soundtrack made up of Evanescence songs. It was beautiful. Every time I listen to those songs I’m reminded of how colossally I’ve failed on this story.

The execution was the poorest job I’ve probably ever done. Thanks to this story, I’m an outliner. Thanks to this story, I got off track with my writing in a bad way. But also thanks to this story, I got back on track. Because I was moving in the right direction with this little disaster, I just needed to figure out how to stop mucking everything up every time I ran into a wall.

After this story, there wasn’t another story playlist until DISCORD. That playlist is a whopping 8 songs, and each one is perfect for some part of the story. I have the “trailer” song. I have the songs that go with certain scenes throughout the story. And I have the THEME SONG. I still can’t listen to it without thinking of my characters and playing out scenes in my head. It used to be exciting. Then it made me feel kind of heartsick. Now, another character in my head has hijacked the song and decided it’s hers. LOL! But I’m so glad she did!! Because I love this song. 🙂

After DISCORD, I got kind of obsessed with playlists and started building them up to 30 songs or so long. Too long. They didn’t all fit, and that’s entirely not the point. I decided after the last story I finished that having a playlist in and of itself just wasn’t doing anything for me. The songs had to mean something to the story or to the characters or something!

The character who hijacked the theme song to DISCORD, she’s been pushing some other songs at me that she likes, and has already picked out a theme song for herself! I haven’t made an official playlist yet as this story isn’t one I’m too serious about writing. It’s more along the lines of something I just play around with in my head sometimes. But the songs she likes are already helping me with the plot that I used to have no intention of writing. I’m trying not to entertain her too much, because I’m not joking. It’s some strange mixture of genres, and it’s crazy, and she’s crazy in a bad way. LOL! Of course, I wrote it down anyway, because I write down everything! And now she has my attention. Because now I’m seriously considering taking a crack at it. 😀

Okay, now that I’m done sounding mental. The current project has a playlist. Much shorter than the previous two or three playlists. I can’t say all the songs fit, but a few of them do. I mostly feel like I had gotten carried away with the playlists, so I’m trying to get back to just picking out songs that embody the story. Songs that I can feed off of when I’m feeling uninspired. 🙂

After all, I think that’s really why I started making playlists again. It’s easier than dropping everything and running through my too large music collection to find something that fits the mood when I need something. I don’t need to do that if I have a playlist. And the best thing about having at least a few songs that embody my story is that listening to them makes me want to write!

It’s like the kind of songs that get your pumped up, you know. If I know I want to write at a certain time, (like before my brain shuts off for the night – like, I wish!) I can play a few of those songs, and suddenly the creativity wheel is spinning up a storm again. It’s like a magnet for my muse! 😛

Anyway, still writing. But I haven’t pushed myself as hard as I usually do. I admit to getting a wee stressed earlier this month (ahem), because I have an August deadline for it to be FINISHED finished, and I was starting to think I wouldn’t make it. The downtime I’ve taken during this project has been really good for my brain though. Drafting can be taxing!

As usual, I freaked out for nothing, because I should be “finished” finished before Saturday, if not a little sooner. I plan on jumping right into editing, because again, my brain isn’t as tired as it usually is. Then I can get some feedback!! LOL! Then maybe I’ll throw a couple of plot bunnies into the boxing cage and let them fight over who’s next. Haha. I want to do “Blackbird Manor” but I’m still a little intimidated by all the POVs, so we’ll see. No rush. 😉

Oh, I had a minor pause on the project because I had a scene before The Wedding and I was like, “jump straight to the wedding? Or let this character do her thing pre-wedding?” and I wasn’t sure which way to go and then I saw my friend’s dance show and hung out with my bestie and I feel better about it again.

Anyway…playlists! I had one, then I redid it ’cause some of the songs didn’t fit the new direction of the story and I just redid it again because I wanted to add this one song I heard on the Tony Awards the other night. I think, like, 90% of this Victoria playlist are Broadway cast recordings.

I love musicals! I have a song from The Lion King on the current story’s playlist. 🙂 Some of my other playlists will need an overhaul if I pick the stories back up again.

You sound mental? No way. LOL. I love your rants.

I only use playlists on rare occasions. Usually I have one to two theme songs that govern a book, and everything else is mood filler. *shrugs* It’s probably my lack of discipline or how splintered my brain has become around kids. *shrugs*

I love music, but I’ve never thought about making a playlist to go with my stories. I do have one song I picked out that is kind of the love theme for my hero and heroine, and I have the music that goes with the trailers I made, but that’s about it. Choosing a playlist sounds like it would be fun. I’ll have to try it.
Good luck with your deadline! I’m sure you’ll get there. 🙂

Thank you!! 😀 It’s definitely fun. I love to have at least one song that embodies the theme of the story. I’ve never made a trailer anything! I should. I used to make slide shows and assign a song to those. I haven’t done that in a while.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. My current project doesn’t have one…yet? But I do have some go-to pieces which cover a lot of bases if I need some musical inspiration.

I have a few go-to songs that fit nearly everything. Benefit of always writing in the same genre I guess. Haha!
