I had something else planned, but the more I looked at it, the less sense it made. So, I’m just going to talk about my blog today. Lol!
Hopefully no one noticed that my site was completely defunct for a couple of days over the weekend. Like COMPLETELY defunct. There was nothing here!! It was terrible!
What happened was this: I’ve been wanting to go to a self-hosted site for over a year now, but I could never figure out how it worked. I know right? And I’m the resident tech person in my family. In my defense, I’m not THAT stupid, I just don’t like to ask for help. Ha, ha. I learn a lot of stuff the hard way. This is no exception.
So, I’ve tried to do the whole self-hosted thing a couple of other times before and would always give up and cancel my plan after a couple of days because it always looked so freaking complicated! Now I feel like an idiot though, because now that I know what to do, it’s like super easy. Story of my life.
Anyway, so I’m in my dashboard on the hosting site and I’m poking around, clicking on random stuff because that is how I roll. In any case, everything is going well, and I get further along in the process than I’ve ever gotten before! Yay! Then I run into a problem: I have no idea how to actually migrate my site over to the new servers. I try a few different things, get frustrated, and give up.
This time, however, when I called to cancel my hosting plan and give up for another year, probably, the customer service guy was like, “Do you want to talk to one of our amazing technical guys?”
I was like, “Not really, but sure…” Why not? Like, learn to ask for help, stupid, right? Maybe it will work.
So, I did. And yes, it actually did help some. Neither one of us completely understood what the other one was trying to say, but it pointed me in the right direction. Four long hours of thinking I’m an idiot, and with a little help, I’m nearly done in 3 seconds. Story. Of. My. Life. Grr…
He offered to do everything for me, but come on, no, I can do it. And I did. I get my site migrated and everything looks GREAT, thank GOD!! But then the domain keeps bouncing back to WordPress.com. Apparently, this is normal while the nameservers change over, but I want it working NOW, so I take my old site down thinking it will help. It. Did. Not. And this is when my site went completely offline, and I started freaking out – like WHY did I do this to myself?!
Okay, now, if I had just gone to bed after migrating my content over like a normal person, everything would have been fine in the morning, but per my nature, I keep messing with it, and then I had to bug people for help again.
Of course, everyone was great and helpful and fantastic, and now everything is fine. Lesson learned: freaking ask for help when I need it. Also, go to bed.
FYI: This is the same person who broke her sink when she moved into her condo because she didn’t like the color of the “sprayer.” Since, I know nothing about pipes, I’m lucky I only broke the sink. At least I could laugh about it with the guy at the hardware store and then later with the handyman. It is pretty funny. Me, under the sink with a wrench. I don’t even own a real hammer. I have a little pink hammer that my sister gave me, and I freaking love it. Hey, it gets nails in the walls. 🙂
For those you who know I have another blog, it also bounced back to WordPress.com a couple of times, but for some reason I didn’t freak out over that. I was like, “Oh, I’m sure it will fix itself.” headdesk
So, why did I do all this? Why self-hosted when everything was fine? I know you’re all dying to know! 😛
For starters, this gives me more flexibility, and it’s a cheaper than what I was doing. For seconds, I want to hire a blog designer one day, so it was this or change platforms because I couldn’t install a custom template on WordPress.com.
I’ve always had this vision for what I’ve wanted this blog to look like, so I am FINALLY going to make that happen! Maybe soon! ^_^
I remember doodling out an idea for it back in 2011. I tried to do it myself first, of course, and as I have no website building skills, I finally just gave up and figured out how to make a header for the blog instead. We can’t do everything, right?
Anywho, I hope everyone is having a great August! <3
