Author Interview: Crystal Collier! + Giveaway!

Happy Book Birthday to Crystal Collier’s SOULLESS, which released Monday, October 13th, 2014!! To celebrate, today I’m interviewing the architect behind the series herself!

Hey, Crystal! I’m so excited about this interview! Thanks so much for your time. ^_^

CC: Yay! Thank you so much for having me, Krystal. Have some cheese, eh? In fact, cheese for everyone. On me. (Ahem, the virtual kind—I can afford that.)

Thank you! So! Writers are sometimes inspired by the craziest, most unrelated things. Where did the inspiration for this series come from?

CC: 1 part dream, 1 part kids’ imagination. Truth, portions of this series were in the works when I was 13. (Honest to goodness!) I remember playing in the back yard with one of my friends, and we were basically acting out the roles of characters who will be introduced in later books. Granted, things have changed a great deal since then.

That’s so awesome! I can see why the essence of them has stayed with you all these years. So, tell us, where do you usually find inspiration?

CC: Anywhere, but especially my dreams. I wake up with an entire plot and cast of characters clamoring to be written.

Dude! I love it! I’ve gotten tiny bits and pieces from dreams, but never an entire plot! So, I gotta know, how did you find Alexia’s voice? Did you interview her? Take her on a coffee date? Or did she come to you out of the box like that?

CC: Alexia wrote herself. As authors, we struggle with some characters, but Alexia told me her story without having to be prodded, bribed, or filled with coffee. I guess she’s just polite like that.

Very cool. I love it when they do that! She’s certainly very interesting. What about this story drew you in so much that you just had to write it?

CC: I want to say it was the mystery or supernatural aspects, and that definitely fueled my love of the story, but it was actually the struggle between Alexia and her Father—who is basically a symbol of society’s expectations for a young lady. I wanted to see her break free and to make her own path.

They have such great chemistry. My favorite moment between them is in the first book, the morning after that first night. ^_^ What is the easiest part of writing this series?

CC: Spending so much time with characters you adore.

Right! What is the hardest part?

CC: Forcing those characters back into the path that completes the overall story arc. (They have such a tendency to wander.)

Little wanders. 🙂  Was MOONLESS your first novel? If not, what was your first novel about?

CC: Heavens no. I completed two novellas and another full novel before the first draft of MOONLESS. The novellas were historical fiction about an island tribe (so awful that no one will EVER read them), and the novel…that’s a fantasy that will eventually see the light of day. (Avoiding spoilers here.)

Ooh, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more details about that. So, I’m dying to know, can words describe the first time you held your book in your hands?

CC: Actually, my first thought was, “Gosh, why is her head so big?”

LOL! Well, it does take up the entire cover. 😉 When story ideas come to you do they hit you all at once or develop more slowly over time?

CC: Typically I have the entire cast, opening scene, driving conflict and mood when a story hits me. Sometimes the end too. I’ll write it all down (20 to 50 pages), then leave it for a while. When I come back (typically a year or three later), the story and characters have become part of my soul.

Wow! I love your story baking technique. Speaking of, we writers are always cooking up something, can you tell us a little bit about what you have in the works?

CC: Currently, both TIMELESS, the third book in the Maiden of Time trilogy, and BELLEZZA, a serial story that follows the vicious Bellezza through her game of revenge.

Yes! Love her. And because I’m random, I have a thing for glass bottles and hourglasses (also pandas and unicorns). Do you collect anything?

CC: We’ve moved so many times, I’ve stopped collecting things. Or maybe it’s that the kids break them all? I ADORE pewter figurines.

I don’t have any, but I certainly love to look at them when I see them. What’s your favorite cookie flavor?

CC: Snickerdoodle.

Mine, too! So, it’s well known that you have a huge thing for cheese (yay, cheese!). Ever tried the fake stuff?

CC: shudders Unfortunately, and let us never speak of it again. 😉

Ha,ha! You’re awesome. And lastly, any sage advice you can pass on to the aspiring writer community? ^_^

CC: Create for fun. Let your imagination go wild. Don’t reign it in until you have to, and when that day comes, make sure you have a supply of cheese.

Perfect! Thank you so much, Crystal, for giving us a glimpse into the inner workings of your mind. You rock! ^_^
